Short for Economic Watchers Survey, a Japanese confidence indicator that gauges the sentiment of businesses at the street (retail) level
Businesses such as restaurants and taxi services that are business-cycle sensitive are provided a set of questionnaires that ask them for their thoughts on current and future conditions. For the headline number, 50 represents the line between expansion and slowdown.
