Action taken by a trader or investor to buy a financial instrument in anticipation of rising value.

The logical trader takes a long position at a price when he expects the it to rise. For example, if a trader takes a long position in the USD/JPY, he or she is anticipating that the US Dollar will rise in value relative to the Japanese Yen.

Opposite of short position.
