Governor of the Bank of Japan 2003-2008
Toshihiko Fukui replaced Masaru Hayami as head of the Policy Board and Governor of the BoJ in March of 2003. Prior to this position he was Deputy Governor of the bank but left after being scandals hit the Ministry of Finance in 1998. He returned to the bank after it secured independence.
He notably accepted the Yen’s weakness, as well as indicating changes to the 5-year period of loose monetary policies.
Toshihiko Fukui was succeeded by Masaaki Shirakawa in 2008
